Die Drehorgel, ein in der mitteleuropäischen Kultur verbreitetes Instrument, steht im Zentrum der Installation „Deutschland“. In regelmäßigen Abständen spielt sie automatisch die Melodie der deutschen Nationalhymne. Durch eine starke Verlangsamung des Tempos erklingt das Originalmusikstück jedoch bis zur Unkenntlichkeit verzerrt.
Nationalhymnen verbinden Menschen zu einer Gemeinschaft, schaffen das Gefühl von Zugehörigkeit und tragen so zur Schaffung eines kollektiven Heimatgefühls bei. Im Umkehrschluss schließt dieser Prozess jedoch auch andere Personen aus. Die Installation „Deutschland“ wirft daher nicht zuletzt die Frage nach Identität auf – wer darf dazugehören, und wer entscheidet über diese Zugehörigkeit?
The barrel organ, an instrument used throughout central European culture, lies at the heart of the installation “Germany”. It is programed to play the German national anthem at regular intervals, however, due to the melody being played at a very slow pace, the original composition is distorted beyond recognition. National anthems generate a sense of community and belonging and are thus part of the creation of a collective sense of home while, conversely, this process also excludes others. This way, the installation “Germany” also raises the question of identity – who is allowed to be part of a community und who gets to make this decision?
